AI is driving new wave of startups with smaller teams: OpenAI CEO Sam Altman

Sam Altman, chief executive of OpenAI, said artificial intelligence is enabling a new generation of startups and could lead to significant breakthroughs in science, mathematics and economic productivity, according to remarks made during a recent podcast appearance.

Speaking on the Nothing But Tech podcast on Saturday, Altman said advances in AI are lowering barriers to building companies, allowing smaller teams and in some cases even individuals to create products and scale businesses.

“One of the most important things about this technology is the entrepreneurship it’s enabling,” Altman said, adding that he wants to be “in the trenches” with early-stage founders building companies with small teams but large access to computing power.

Altman said AI could enable a shift toward smaller, more efficient companies, including “one-person startups” or teams with just a few founders.

“I think now we are going to be in a world where you can have these one-person startups… and the amount of good stuff that’s going to make for all of us will be quite great to see,” he said.

Altman shared that he has recently met founders operating with minimal headcount and significant access to compute resources, reflecting a broader shift in how startups are being built in the AI era.
