There is no concept for creamy layer in Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs) reservation in Baba Saheb Ambedakar‘s constitution, said Minister of Information and Broadcasting Ashwani Vaishnaw on Friday while announcing key cabinet decisions.
Vaishnaw said the cabinet discussed the Supreme Court’s recent decision on the sub-classification of SCs and STs. The top court had said that states must identify the ‘creamy layer’ in the SCs and STs and exclude them from reservation benefits.
“Union Cabinet has reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to upholding the constitutional provisions established by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. It is important to note that, according to the Constitution, there is no provision for a ‘creamy layer’ within the SCs and STs,” said the IB minister.
