India consumes around 26-27 million tonnes of edible oil annually, of which more than 60% is met through imports. This high import dependence exposes the domestic market to global price movements, supply-demand dynamics, currency fluctuations and changes in competing edible oil prices.

Sunflower oil accounts for about 9% of India’s edible oil consumption, with annual crude sunflower oil consumption estimated at around 3 million tonnes. Of this, nearly 2.8 million tonnes are met through imports, making the segment particularly vulnerable to international price movements and global supply disruptions.
The interconnected nature of the edible oil market also means that price movements in competing oils can influence sunflower oil demand and pricing through substitution patterns and relative competitiveness.
“The introduction of the Crude Sunflower Oil futures contract will provide market participants with a transparent and efficient exchange-traded mechanism to manage price exposure, while strengthening the development of the domestic edible oil market,” said Praveena Rai, MD & CEO, MCX.
The new futures contract is aimed at importers, refiners, processors, traders and other participants in the edible oil value chain. It is expected to provide them with a mechanism to hedge against price volatility and improve the efficiency of their risk-management strategies. The contract will be cash-settled, with prices quoted on an Ex-Tank JNPT basis, excluding applicable sales tax and GST.
The launch comes as India remains heavily dependent on overseas supplies to meet its edible oil requirements, making price risk management an important consideration for businesses across the supply chain.
With the addition of crude sunflower oil futures, MCX is seeking to deepen the development of an exchange-traded ecosystem for edible oils and provide market participants with greater transparency and tools to manage commodity price risk.
