As per the report, Mundka toll plaza in Delhi is one of the sites where MLFF is undergoing testing, with boom barriers raised and vehicles waved through. Commuters at Mundka experienced this barrierless system, receiving messages of toll deduction from their FASTag wallets shortly after passing. This new system is scheduled to go live by mid-May, making Mundka the second such plaza in the country to implement it.

The first MLFF plaza to go live is at Choryasi on NH-48 between Surat and Bharuch in Gujarat, starting May 1. Testing at Mundka involved assessing the performance of installed gadgets and sensors during various times of the day, including peak hours. The system is now ready for live operation this month, with instant toll deduction messages for users.
Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL), an arm of NHAI for tolling and highway management, has already awarded contracts for MLFF tolling at 17 plazas. These include locations in Haryana, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Maharashtra. IHMCL is further accelerating the rollout by inviting bids for 108 additional toll plazas, grouped under NHAI’s regional offices in Delhi-NCR, Jaipur, Odisha, Gandhinagar, and Hyderabad.
The Economic Survey 2025-26 had projected the rollout of MLFF tolling across all National Highways that are four-lane or more, and all high-speed corridors, by March 2029. However, officials are optimistic about achieving this target earlier due to the system’s benefits. These benefits include eliminating waiting time and congestion at plazas, plugging toll revenue leaks, and removing the need for toll booth structures.
According to NHAI chairman Santosh Kumar Yadav, MLFF has beomce essential as India expands its network of expressways and economic corridors.“With MLFF tolling, there will be no waiting at toll plazas and no waste of time or fuel. This will help reduce logistics costs,” he stated.
While the system promises efficiency, authorities are also addressing potential challenges. Instances of unreadable number plates — due to damage or deliberate obstruction — are being handled through FASTag-linked vehicle data. For violations such as insufficient balance or absence of FASTag, e-notices will be issued, requiring payment within 72 hours, failing which penalties will apply.
Non-payment will lead to denial of a no-objection certificate (NOC) during registration renewal, change of ownership, transfer, and fitness certificate issuance. Offenders will also be unable to access other vehicle-related services until all dues are cleared.
Vehicle owners can lodge complaints regarding faulty toll deductions on the website within three days, and the deducted amount will be credited back to their FASTag wallet after verification.
