India-Jordan trade: Sitharaman seeks deeper ties, $5 billion target by 2030

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Monday met Jordan’s Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Zeina Zeid Toukan on the sidelines of the AIIB 2026 Annual Meeting in Doha, with the two sides discussing ways to deepen bilateral cooperation, particularly in food security, fertilisers, trade and investment.

Sitharaman noted that India is Jordan’s fourth-largest trading partner and highlighted the target of taking bilateral trade to $5 billion by 2030.

The meeting comes as India and Jordan look to expand economic engagement across several sectors, with Jordan seeking stronger cooperation with India in areas including fertilisers, energy, water and infrastructure, as well as greater investment opportunities.

According to a post by the Ministry of Finance on X, Toukan said India is a “critical market” for Jordan and expressed the country’s interest in continuing and strengthening cooperation across these sectors.

The two ministers also discussed food security and fertilisers, areas of particular relevance to both countries, alongside broader opportunities in trade and investment.

Toukan also looked forward to greater investment opportunities in Jordan, according to the ministry.The meeting took place during the AIIB 2026 Annual Meeting in Doha, Qatar, where Sitharaman is participating in discussions with counterparts from other countries.

India and Jordan have been working to broaden their economic partnership beyond trade, with cooperation spanning sectors such as energy, water and infrastructure. The latest talks focused on strengthening these ties and identifying areas for deeper engagement.

Sitharaman’s emphasis on the $5 billion bilateral trade target by 2030 underlines India’s push to further expand economic ties with Jordan and create greater opportunities for trade and investment between the two countries.
