The minister will visit the US from September 29-October 5 wherein he would participate in the G20 Trade Ministers’ Meeting in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on September 30 and October 1, 2026, at the invitation of the USTR.
“Goyal will also engage bilaterally with his counterpart from the US as part of ongoing efforts to advance a balanced and mutually beneficial India-US Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) and finalise an interim deal in line with the Joint Statement of 7 February 2026,” the commerce and industry ministry said in a statement.
As per the February framework, India said it would purchase $500 billion of American energy products, aircraft and aircraft parts, precious metals, technology products and coking coal over five years.
Last week, Goyal said that the trade pact between India and the US is almost “done and dusted” and will be executed once Washington gives New Delhi the right competitive advantage over its competitors in the American market.
India’s goods exports to the US jumped over 21% on-year to $8.3 billion in August while imports rose 65.78% to $5.97 billion.
Washington has levied an additional 10% duty on Indian goods under a Section 301 probe on alleged forced labour concerns. The duty, also imposed on 16 other countries, is however lower than the 12.5% tariff the US proposed in June as part of a broader probe under Section 301 of its Trade Act. Separately, Washington is continuing investigations into New Delhi’s excess capacity under Section 301.It has also put in place the Lindsey Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026 which authorises it to impose tariffs of up to 100% on countries buying Russian oil and gas.
G20 meet
At the G20 meeting, India will engage constructively with all G20 members and work towards a rules-based, open, inclusive, transparent, equitable and non-discriminatory multilateral trading system, with the World Trade Organization at its core, while ensuring adequate policy space for developing countries, according to the statement.
“On the sidelines of the meeting, Goyal will hold bilateral meetings with his counterparts. The engagements will focus on expanding opportunities for farmers, fishermen, women entrepreneurs, startups, MSMEs and other enterprises,” it said.
In Milwaukee and Chicago, Goyal will meet chief executives of leading American companies in manufacturing, consumer goods, agri-business, retail and technology, and participate in roundtables with businesses, startups and innovative companies. He will highlight the opportunities India offers as a manufacturing and investment destination and invite American companies to deepen their partnerships with Indian enterprises.
The visit is expected to further strengthen the trade and investment partnership between India and the United States and deepen India’s engagement with its G20 partners.
