US is too hot: 130 million are under excessive heat warnings

WASHINGTON: Across the US, 103 million people, or just over 30% of the population, from Oregon to Florida are under excessive heat warnings, watches and advisories, according to the National Weather Service.
“Keep in mind that excessive heat warnings are the highest tier of heat product you can issues so that represents a pretty extreme event,” said Ashton Robinson Cook, a forecaster at the US Weather Prediction Center.
There is a large ridge of high pressure centered over California and Arizona that is baking the region and it will shift to the east starting next week, he said. But the heat is going to last well into next week. “All-in-all things are going to be pretty hot across the southern tier of the US,” Robinson Cook said.
The western and southern US will likely be hot through at least July 26, according to the US Climate Prediction Center. Texas and south Florida will probably continue baking through August.
In California, Sacramento is forecast to have a high of 96F degrees Thursday rising to a high of 110 on Saturday. Fresno will reach 100 Thursday and climb to 112 Saturday. The visitor’s center at Furnace Creek in Death Valley is forecast to reach 129 degrees F — which is hot, but not a record. Death Valley hit 130 on July 9, 2021 and August 16, 2020, according to the National Weather Service website. (There is a report on the website of a 134 high in 1913, but that is in some dispute.)
Florida, meanwhile, is uncomfortably warm even in the ocean. Water temperatures around the southern part of the state have been in the 90s Fahrenheit. Offshore on the southern tip of Florida at Garfield Bight, the water temperature was 95.5F, according to the National Data Buoy Center. At Key West it was 91.8.
