PARIS: As Westminster Abbey prepares to welcome 2,000 guests next weekend for the crowning of King Charles III, AFP is mobilising a huge team of journalists to cover the build-up and the coronation ceremony itself on May 6.
We have already begun to move out a package of stories, with the first part on April 23 focusing on questions such as: Who is on the guest list? What’s inside the gold carriage carrying Charles and Camilla? How many diamonds are in the crown that Camilla will wear?
We’ll rerun a selection of those stories on May 4.
Another batch of stories to move this weekend will take a look at the troubled relationship between the new monarch and his youngest son Harry (who will be at the ceremony) and his wife Meghan (who won’t).
We will also have angles on the republican movement that is gaining momentum in the UK and Commonwealth countries, the king’s finances, and frictions between Buckingham Palace and the press.
Eight months after the death of his mother, we’ll run in-depth profiles of Charles III (diving into his interests in alternative medicine and the environment), and Queen Camilla, who has stoically endured the controversy that has swirled around her relationship with Charles over the decades.
We will move out angles on a daily basis next week.
In that final runup to the ceremony, we will be listening to the Coronation Playlist — featuring everyone from Boney M to Ed Sheeran — while also talking to the Londoners who are determined to flee the capital during the festivities.
