'We all long to be free': Trudeau's wife had told Meghan Markle before separation

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his wife Sophie Gregoire Trudeau unexpectedly announced their separation on Instagram on Wednesday, likely marking the end of the couple’s 18-year high-profile marriage.

Trudeau and his wife, a former entertainment reporter, were childhood friends and married in 2005 in Montreal. They have three children together: Xavier, 15, Ella Grace, 14, and nine-year-old Hadrien.
After Trudeau became prime minister in late 2015, he and Sophie were often seen together at social functions and on foreign trips. But in recent years, Sophie has curtailed such appearances with her husband.

The two of them did travel to London in May for the coronation of King Charles and were together when U.S. President Joe Biden visited in late March.
Now, an eerie chat Sophie had with Meghan Markle, when she last appeared on Duchess of Sussex’s Archetypes podcast, has resurfaced in light of the couple’s separation.
The First Lady of Canada was referred to as “Soph” during her appearance on the Good Wife/Bad Wife, Good Mom/Bad Mom podcast in November 2022.
On the podcast dedicated to investigating “the labels that try to hold women back,” the First Lady of Canada noted how all women “long to be free in who we are.” She also discussed the guilt that women experience.
The two talked about the “expectations” that mothers and women face, with Sophie saying that women have learnt to “self-impose it” when taking on many roles.
“Women across this planet are still the nucleus of the family, they still carry most of the load for housework, contributing to the family’s well-being and most decisions concerning the kids. But I think we’re all that lioness, we all have that inside of us, and we all long to be free in who we are,” she said.
Meghan then said on the talk show that Sophie had a “full plate,” including raising a kid and maintaining a public relationship after being married to Canada’s Prime Minister for 18 years.
Although Sophie spoke at length about her domestic challenges, she never openly alluded to any marital problems during the show.
