A woman, who has been arrested after a video shared on social media allegedly showed a prison officer having sex with an inmate in a cell, will be presented before court in London on Monday.
Linda De Sousa Abreu, 30, of Fulham in southwest London was arrested on Friday, and on the same day the Metropolitan Police launched the investigation. De Sousa Abreu was charged on Saturday, BBC reported citing police.
De Sousa Abreu, police officer, will appear at Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court.
In a statement, a Met Police spokesperson said: “A police investigation was launched on 28 June after officers were made aware of a video filmed inside HMP Wandsworth. A woman was arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office later that day.”
The arrest occurred within two months of the prisons watchdog sending an urgent notification to the justice secretary, Alex Chalk, requesting improvements at the jail, Guardian reported.
Chief inspector of prisons Charlie Taylor described the results of a recent inspection as alarming, noting chaotic prison wings and staff unable to maintain accurate prisoner records throughout the day. Katie Price, the prison’s governor, resigned during the inspection.
The HM Prison Service had previously stated that it had referred the former officer to the police regarding the allegation.
This action came after chief inspector of prisons Charlie Taylor issued an “urgent notification” in May about conditions at HMP Wandsworth, according to BBC.
An urgent notification states that the chief inspector of prisons directly informs the Lord Chancellor and secretary of state for justice about urgent and significant concerns regarding a prison’s performance. Inspectors discovered that Wandsworth was plagued by severe overcrowding, vermin infestation, and increasing violence among inmates.
