UK aid agency office in Bangladesh ransacked

LONDON: The regional office of a Catholic relief organisation in Bangladesh has been stormed and ransacked by a mob which is now illegally trespassing in its compound. The Khulna office of Caritas Bangladesh was stormed on Tuesday amid the breakdown of law and order that gripped Bangladesh following the resignation of former PM Sheikh Hasina. Catholic aid agency, Catholic Agency For Overseas Development, partners with Caritas Bangladesh to deliver agricultural projects.
Phil Talman, programme coordinator for Bangladesh at London-based CAFOD, told TOI: “About 40 to 50 people attacked the compound and the office. They wrecked and looted the place and some stayed, occupying the land looking like they are not going to move. It seems as if they want to claim the land. None of the staff was hurt.”
He said no police came and the staff, many of whom are Christian, had a narrow escape. He added they have not gone back yet as the trespassers haven’t left yet.
