Third Indian stabbed to death in UK in a week

LONDON: In yet another horrific stabbing of an Indian in the UK, a 38-year-old from Kerala was killed in Southhampton Way, Camberwell, on Friday by a compatriot, who was arrested by the police on the same day. This is the third killing of an Indian-origin person by stabbing in Britain in last one week.
The Metropolitan Police on Saturday charged Salman Salim, 25, also from Kerala, with the murder of Aravind Sasikumar at a house in Southhampton Way which the duo shared with three other Malayalis to keep the costs down. The two were said to be friends and it is unclear what provoked the stabbing. While Salim is from Varkala in Kerala, Sasikumar hails from Kochi.
Police were called at 1.27am on Friday, to reports of a man found injured in Southampton Way outside a residential property. Despite the efforts of London Ambulance Service, Aravind died on the spot and a post-mortem examination later confirmed that he died of stab wounds to the chest.
Salim appeared at Croydon Magistrates’ Court on Saturday and was remanded in custody to appear at the Old Bailey on June 20.
Detective chief superintendent Seb Adjei-Addoh, local policing commander in Southwark and Lambeth, said: “We will do everything we can to bring those responsible to justice.”
Aravind’s father Sasikumar is a retired LIC employee and lives in Panampilly Nagar in Kochi with his wife Sreedevi. A relative said that Aravind was initially studying in the UK and later started a shop after taking a place on rent. He was to get a ‘long residence’ permit when the tragedy struck, he added.
Anjana, the Kochi Corporation councilor from Panampilly Nagar, said that as per the information she had received, the formalities for bringing back the body would take at least 10 days. “Postmortem has been completed. They have sealed the house where Aravind stayed. Even as the investigation is progressing, the Malayali Association and the embassy have intervened to bring back the body,” she said.
“We are hearing that Aravind returned from work to see an argument going on and was stabbed when he tried to intervene. We don’t know what exactly transpired,” she said.
Aravind had moved to the UK around 10 years ago on a student visa. It is unclear what visa he was now on. According to locals, Salim was “in and out of work”. Aravind has a younger brother, Shekhar, who studies in Northampton. Aravind had introduced him to Salim on a recent visit.
Earlier, an Irish-Indian student Grace Kumar and Hyderabad native Tejaswini Reddy were killed in stabbing attacks in Nottingham and Wembley, respectively on Tuesday.
