NEW DELHI: Prince Harry and Meghan Markle arrived in Nigeria on Friday to support the Invictus Games, an initiative established by Prince Harry to assist injured and ill servicemembers and veterans.
They landed in Abuja, the capital, early in the morning, on their first visit to Nigeria which came at the invitation of the country’s military.
During their time in Nigeria, Prince Harry and Meghan are set to meet wounded soldiers and their families, demonstrating solidarity and aiming to boost morale and well-being.Nigerian officials have emphasized the importance of this visit in aiding the recovery of soldiers.
The Invictus Games, founded by Prince Harry in 2014, provide a platform for wounded veterans and servicemembers to participate in sports events akin to the Paralympics.
The Nigerian military views the Invictus Games as a valuable tool in the rehabilitation of personnel involved in the longstanding battle against Boko Haram extremists. Highlighting the positive impact of the Invictus Games Abidemi Marquis, Nigeria’s Defense Headquarters sports director said, “This engagement with Invictus is giving us the opportunity for the recovery of our soldiers,”
During their stay, Prince Harry and Meghan will attend basketball and volleyball matches, as well as engage with local non-governmental organizations in Abuja and Lagos that receive their support. Meghan will co-host an event on women in leadership alongside Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, director-general of the World Trade Organization, according to their spokesman Charlie Gipson.
