Adorned in dark blue velvet robes, the traditional dress for the ceremony, the royal couple walked down the hill from the Berkshire castle’s State Apartments. Garter Day is a royal family tradition where Ladies and Knights of the Order of the Garter process down the hill dressed in white plumed hats and dark blue velvet robes.
Attending this ancient ceremony in Windsor, King Charles marked his return to official duties amid his cancer treatment. In February, he disclosed his cancer and then gradually eased back into public duties.
Kate Middleton was not present at the ceremony while the King and the Queen were accompanied by Prince William.
Garter day follows the King’s birthday parade, Trooping the Colour. Kate made her first public appearance since her cancer diagnosis as Trooping the Colour. But she is not yet ready for a full-time return to royal duties, as her absence at Garter Day celebrations indicated.

I wanted to express my apologies for any confusion the family photograph we shared yesterday caused. I hope everyone celebrating had a very happy Mother’s Day,” Kate wrote in clarification.
On March 22, Kate announced that she was taking preventive chemotherapy. After three months, she issued a written message with her treatment updates that she was making good progress but was not out of the woods yet.
