Emergency services rushed to a nuclear submarine shipyard in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, following reports of a significant fire that erupted in the early hours of this morning.
Dramatic footage circulating online reveals thick smoke and flames rising from the BAE Systems facility, with locals reporting that the building is engulfed in fire. The incident appears to be centred at the Devonshire Dock Hall (DDH), a substantial shipbuilding complex integral to the BAE Systems shipyard located in the Barrow Island area.
The blaze is believed to have started around 12.45am on 30 October, and the DDH is known for its role in constructing the Vanguard-class nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines. It is currently involved in the construction of the Astute-class submarines, which are set to replace the Vanguard fleet, as per the Mirror. Reports suggest that the site may be housing HMS Agincourt, a new Astute-class nuclear-powered fleet submarine valued at £1.6 billion.
In a statement, Cumbria Police confirmed that emergency services are actively responding to the significant fire. The incident was first reported at approximately 12.44am, and efforts to control the situation are ongoing.
Authorities have assured the public that there is no nuclear risk associated with the fire. However, residents in the vicinity are being urged to remain indoors, keeping doors and windows closed while emergency services manage the situation.
As a result of the incident, two individuals have been transported to hospital with suspected smoke inhalation, although no additional casualties have been reported. All other personnel have been evacuated from the Devonshire Dock Hall and are accounted for.
