ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan army condemned India during a media briefing on ongoing anti-terror operations in the country on Tuesday, accusing it of violations of the ceasefire and of Pakistani airspace.
Addressing his maiden press conference, Pakistan army spokesperson Maj Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry began his statement with the situation on Pakistan’s eastern border with India and the LoC.
The director-general of Inter-Services Public Relations, the army’s media wing, claimed India had violated the LoC ceasefire 56 times in the ongoing year, including three violations of airspace, 22 incidents of speculative firing, six ceasefire violations and 25 technical airspace violations. “Pakistan had also shot down six Indian spy quadcopters,” the DG ISPR claimed.
India, Gen Sharif alleged, has been conducting false-flag operations and claimed, without elaborating, that some local elements advance New Delhi’s agenda knowingly or unknowingly.
“India’s aggressive designs and baseless allegations cannot change history. India cannot change the historical status of Kashmir. If India plans any adventure, Pakistani forces will give a strong response,” the spokesperson said before describing the more precarious security situation faced by his country on its western border.
On the country’s western frontiers in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) provinces, Gen Sharif said terrorists have been trying to destroy peace, while security forces, police and other law enforcement agencies remained engaged in foiling their attempts. “In this regard, Pakistan’s forces have taken appreciable measures, tracked down terrorist networks, and we continue to do so,” he said, claiming that linkages between banned outfit Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan and Baloch militant groups were also proven in terrorism incidents.
Sharing details of terror and anti-terror measures, he said 436 terrorist attacks had taken place in the country so far this year, resulting in 293 people being killed and 521 injured. In KP, he said, 192 people were killed and 330 injured, while 80 were killed and 170 injured in Balochistan.
He said 14 people were killed in Pakistan Punjab, while seven people lost their lives in Sindh province in terror-related incidents.
The DG ISPR said security forces had conducted 8,269 intelligence-based operations this year, killing or arresting 1,525 terrorists.
Of these operations, according to Gen Sharif, 3,531 were conducted in KP in which 159 terrorists were killed or arrested, 119 were conducted in Punjab and 519 were conducted in Sindh.
“To rid the country of terrorism, more than 70 operations are conducted daily,” he added.
