ISLAMABAD: Former Pakistan president Pervez Musharraf was laid to rest on Tuesday at an army graveyard in Karachi.
His funeral was attended by former army chiefs Qamar Javed Bajwa, Ashfaq Parvez Kayani Aslam Beg, several politicians and other senior military officials. The burial under tight security followed prayers at the city’s Malir cantonment.
Earlier, the ex-army chief’s body was flown to the southern Pakistani port city on a special plane on Monday night from Dubai, where he died Sunday after a protracted battle with rare disease amyloidosis. He was 79.
Troops had cordoned off Karachi airport’s old terminal hours before the special plane landed. Later, the hearse was taken to the cantonment amid heavy security. In Dubai, the body was given the ghusl — ritual washing and shrouding of the deceased ahead of burial.
Delhi-born Musharraf ruled Pakistan for nine years till 2008 after usurping power in a coup when erstwhile PM Nawaz Sharif attempted to remove him as army chief in October 1999, having appointed him a year earlier over more senior officers.
