NEW DELHI: An Indian couple and their three-month-old grandchild were among four people killed in a multi-vehicle collision in Canada‘s Ontario province. The incident occurred after police pursued a suspect of a liquor store robbery who was driving in the wrong direction.
All four individuals were pronounced dead at the scene on Highway 401 in Whitby, approximately 50 kilometers east of Toronto, according to police statements.
Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) disclosed that two of the deceased, a 60-year-old man and a 55-year-old woman, were visitors from India. However, the SIU did not disclose their identities. The couple’s three-month-old grandson also lost his life in the collision, which resulted in the closure of Highway 401 for several hours on Monday.
In addition to the fatalities, the SIU reported that the parents of the infant, a 33-year-old father and a 27-year-old mother, were traveling in the same vehicle and sustained injuries. The mother’s injuries were described as serious by the SIU.
The suspect of the liquor store robbery was also killed in the collision, which involved at least six vehicles. Reports said that the deadly car chase started with a liquor store robbery in Bowmanville and culminated approximately 20 minutes later, after the suspect, driving a cargo van, led Durham police on a high-speed chase against oncoming traffic on Highway 401.
A 38-year-old male passenger from the cargo van sustained serious injuries and was transported to the hospital for treatment. Autopsies for the victims were conducted in Toronto on Wednesday.
The SIU, tasked with investigating incidents involving police-related deaths, serious injuries, or allegations of sexual assault, has assigned seven investigators, one forensic investigator and one collision reconstructionist to continue probing this case.
