An Indian man in Canada sparked outrage on social media after sharing a controversial video that appears to show him exploiting grocery store pricing systems. Speaking in Gujarati, the man casually demonstrated a “trick” to save money by swapping price tags on apples, an act many have condemned as theft.
In the now-deleted video, the man could be seen explaining how to replace the price tag of a more expensive apple with that of a cheaper one.He walked his viewers through the process, switching the price tags between apples priced at $3.49 and $2.49. “Don’t worry,” he said in Gujarati. “All you do is take this sticker and put it here. And then take this apple for $2.49.”
However, his attempt at humor or thrift did not sit well with social media users. Almost immediately, the video was widely criticized, with people calling it out as unethical.
One Twitter user, who shared the video, said, “Canadian newcomer records video for his Instagram followers showing them how to scam Canada’s grocery stores. This should be grounds for automatic deportation.”
The outrage didn’t stop there. The same user added, “He came to Canada as a fake student and now he’s teaching others how to steal from the country that gave him a chance at a new life. Nothing pisses me off more,” sharing a screenshot of the man’s Facebook bio.
Other social media users echoed the sentiment, with one comment reading, “That’s not just a scam; it’s literally a crime.” Another user speculated about the man’s future, saying, “Whenever he goes for employment, that background check is going to be fizzy.”
In the wake of the backlash, the Instagram account from which the video was shared no longer appears active.
