Why is Saudi Arabia hosting a summit on Ukraine?

Saudi Arabia, which has so far remained neutral in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, will host a Kyiv-organised peace summit in early August, an official told the Associated Press.

Where
The summit is likely to be held in the Red Sea port city of Jeddah. The kingdom and Kyiv have not made any official announcement yet.

Who
Those taking part in the summit will include Ukraine, as well as Brazil, India, South Africa and several other countries, the official said.
A high-level official from US President Joe Biden‘s administration is also expected to attend.
Planning for the event is being overseen by Ukraine, the AP report said. It is not clear yet if Russia and China will attend it.
Why
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in May attended an Arab League summit in Jeddah to press those nations to back Kyiv.
Saudi Arabia has also maintained a close relationship with Russia as part of the OPEC+ group.
Hosting such talks could help raise the profile of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who has sought to reach a detente with Iran and push for a peace in the kingdom’s years-long war in Yemen.
A sore point
The summit comes at a time when ties between Riyadh and the West remain strained over the 2018 killing of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi at the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul, which US intelligence agencies assess that Prince Mohammed ordered.
Meanwhile…
Three Ukrainian drones attacked Moscow in the early hours on Sunday, Russian authorities said, injuring one person and prompting a temporary closure of traffic in and out of one of four airports around the Russian capital.
