Teams from 24 countries join search as quake toll tops 11.7k

Hope of finding survivors fading, stretched rescue teams in Turkiye and Syria searched on Wednesday for signs of life in the rubble of thousands of buildings toppled by the world’s deadliest quake in over a decade, as the toll passed 11,700.
Turkiye restricted access to Twitter, an internet monitor group said, as President Recep Tayyip Erdogan began a tour of the disaster zone while conceding to “shortcomings”, amid criticism of his government’s slow response. Teams from over two dozen countries have joined in the rescue efforts. In Turkiye’s Malatya city, victims may have frozen to death as temperatures dipped to -6 degrees C.
Ghanaian soccer player Christian Atsu, earlier reported to have been rescued, remains missing, Hatayspor director V Demirel said.
