When joining the Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF)/Employees’ Pension Scheme (EPS), members must nominate their nominees, who would get the PF amount to their credit as well as the pension.
According to the member’s marital status, there are two categories of nominees for the EPF and pension schemes. (In general, EPF nominees have the right to EDLI benefits. Please note that EDLI payments will only be paid out in the event of a death “while in Service.”
The steps to be followed by the EPF/EPS members to furnish their nominees details online, as per the EPF member information booklet available on the EPFO website:
Bachelor/Spinster having “Family” for EPF/ EDLI scheme
Dependent parents are eligible in EDLI scheme or EPF. While in EPS scheme, dependent scheme or any person are eligible for nominee. The rule remains same for male member or female member.
Nominations can be made for one or more persons belonging to his family duly mentioning the percentage of Share
Bachelor / Spinster having “No Family”
Irrespective of gender of member, nomination can be made any person or persons, whether related to him or not or even to an institution for EPF/ EDLI scheme. Under EPS scheme, any person can be a nominee.
If the member is a Married Person
Here is a list of eligible nominee for EPF/ EDLI scheme for a male member.
- His wife
- His children(whether married or unmarried)
- His dependent parents
- His deceased son’s widow and children
EPS scheme
His wife, sons and daughters (including children adopted legally before death in service.)
Here is a list of eligible nominee for EPF/ EDLI scheme for a female member.
- Her husband
- Her children(whether married or unmarried)
- Her dependent parents
- Her husband’s dependent parents
- Her deceased son’s widow and children
EPS scheme
Her husband, sons and daughters (including children adopted legally before death in service).
Things to note
- If a member has a family at the time of making a nomination, it must be in favour of one or more members of his family for EPF/EDLI Schemes, and any nomination made by such member in favour of a person who is not a member of his family is void.
- The member shall make a new nomination upon his marriage, and any nomination made prior to such marriage shall be regarded INVALID.
- If a member does not have a family at the time of nomination, the nomination may be in favour of any person or persons; but, if the member later develops a family, the nomination is deemed INVALID and the member must submit a new nomination.
- Members may nominate their nominations an unlimited number of times via e-Nomination in the member site, however only the most recent nomination will be VALID.
