Toyota Innova Hycross

ONE MPV THAT has been available in the Indian market for nearly two decades is the Toyota Innova. The Japanese marque recently launched the new-generation Innova, which not only debuts a new suffix (Hycross), but also gets a strong hybrid powertrain option. It is now a monocoque MPV, but with design cues derived from modern-age SUVs. It can not only do everything that the Innova did, but also goes the extra mile and offers a more premium cabin experience. It is offered in five broad trims: G, GX, VX, ZX and ZX(O). It gets two powertrain choices: a 2-litre petrol engine paired with an electric motor (186 PS combined, and up to 206 Nm). A non-hybrid version with the same engine is also available (174 PS/205 Nm). The former comes with an e-CVT, while the latter comes with a CVT.

Skoda Octavia
ALTHOUGH SEDANS ARE gradually losing their markets globally, there are some that have been around for years. One such model is the Skoda Octavia. In its latest generation, the Octavia has a lot in common with the flagship Skoda sedan, Superb, including its looks and engine. The Octavia, after the BS6 update, has just the 2-litre turbo petrol unit (190 PS/320 Nm) on offer, which is coupled with a seven-speed DCT. Skoda sells it in two trims: Style and Laurin & Klement.

Hyundai Tucson
TUCSON IS AN SUV that has been on sale for over two decades. It was introduced in its fourth-generation avatar in 2022 with the segment-first ADAS tech. Hyundai offers it in two trims: Platinum and Signature. It gets two engine options: 2-litre diesel (186 PS/416 Nm) and 2-litre petrol unit (156 PS/192 Nm). Both get a torque converter automatic gearbox, an eight-speed unit with the diesel one, and a six-speed one with the petrol one. The top-end diesel engine can also be had with an all-wheel drive system.

Jeep Meridian
WITH JEEP MERIDIAN, the full-sized SUV space got a new contender in 2022. It is offered in two trims: Limited and Limited (O). The propulsion is carried out by a 2-litre turbo diesel engine (170 PS/350 Nm). This engine is paired with a six-speed manual and an optional nine-speed automatic. All-wheel drive is only available in the top-end automatic. Jeep offers the Meridian in a seven-seater layout. It is the three-row version of the Compass, and shares its mechanicals and most of the equipment with the smaller SUV.

Volkswagen Tiguan
EVEN BEFORE IT STARTED with its SUV onslaught in India, Volkswagen has had one mid-sized SUV since 2017: Tiguan. In December 2021, it was given a mid-life upgrade, which provided classier looks and a more premium interior. With the facelift, the SUV lost out on its diesel power and got a 2-litre turbo petrol engine (190 PS/320 Nm), mated with a seven-speed DCT. However, it still has the all-wheel drivetrain on offer and Volkswagen has ensured that Tiguan feels effortless to drive. The five-seat SUV is as solidly built as before and doesn’t fall short in terms of quality. It is offered in a single trim, Elegance, which puts it in the territory of full-sized SUVs like the Toyota Fortuner and MG Gloster.
