The guidelines cover fresh and frozen meat of bovine animals, sheep and goat.
Notifying the conditions, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) said that specified meat and meat products will be allowed to be exported as halal certified to 15 countries including the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Bangladesh, only if such goods are produced or processed and/or packaged in a facility certified under the ‘India Conformity Assessment Scheme (I-CAS) – Halal’ of the Quality Council of India (QCI).
“Policy conditions for export of specified halal meat and meat products are notified,” the DGFT said, adding that the exporter will have to provide the valid certificate to the buyer in the importing country post shipment.
Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Malaysia, the Philippines, Qatar, Singapore and Turkey are also among the 15 countries.
The commerce and industry ministry had last year said that all meat and meat products are to be exported as ‘halal certified’ only if they’re produced, processed and packed under a valid certificate issued by a certification body accredited by a board of the Quality Council of India.The global halal food market was $1.97 trillion in 2021 and is projected to reach $3.9 trillion by 2027.
