india: India to take lead in building digital infra, say Nokia and Ericsson chiefs


India is expected to take the lead in building digital infrastructure globally given the pace of 5G rollout the country, global chiefs of Nokia and Ericsson said at an industry event Wednesday.

Nokia Corporation president and chief executive, Pekka Lundmark said that India is now the second largest market for the global telecom equipment maker and that it is now exporting 5G base stations from the country.

“What I believe is really impressive is the way India has been systematically building the digital ecosystem. Now (India is seeing) the most ambitious and the fastest by a big margin 5G rollout in the world,” Lundmark said.

Telecom market leader Reliance Jio and second ranked Bharti Airtel have been rolling out 5G services since October. Jio expects to cover the whole of India by 2023 end while Airtel is aiming to cover the country by March 2024.

He added that these developments are building blocks for the future economic growth in any country and “India is really taking a lead in this respect”.

Giving the context of 4G and how it impacted countries’ digital growth, Ericsson, president and chief executive, Borje Ekholm observed that economies like the US and China produced digital giants like Facebook, and Tencent on the back of 4G.In the case of 5G, he predicted that India will have the most advanced digital infrastructure.
