In the second phase of the scheme, starting in 2024, houses built under PMAY will be registered only in the name of women or under joint ownership with men. A senior official confirmed this, stating, “The scheme aspires to provide 100% ownership to women in the second phase.” Currently, 74% of the houses built under the scheme are owned by women alone or jointly.
To identify beneficiaries for the second phase, the Union Rural Development Ministry is launching a new survey called “Awas-Plus 2024”. This survey will include a “self-survey” option, allowing individuals to upload their information directly through an app. The government aims to identify the remaining 80 lakh beneficiaries through this survey, adding to the existing list of 1.2 crore beneficiaries.
States have been instructed to complete the Awas-Plus 2024 surveys by November 30 and sanction housing for eligible families by December 31. The construction of these houses is expected to be finished within one year.
