Government widens scope of e-Shram portal to include family details of unorganised workers

The government has widened the scope of its e-Shram portal to now include details of the family members of the unorganised workers, thus paving way for specific women and children specific schemes for migrant families in future, the labour ministry said on Monday.

According to the labour ministry, under the revamped portal the registered workers will now have access to employment opportunities, skilling and apprenticeship opportunities, digital skilling and states’ schemes. Labour and employment minister Bhupender Yadav launched the new features on the eShram portal.

“The new features added in eShram portal will enhance the utility of the portal and facilitate ease of registration for unorganised workers,” the ministry said in a statement.

Further, a feature of capturing family details of migrant workers has been added to the eShram portal, it said. “This feature can help in providing child education and women centric schemes to the migrant workers who have migrated with their family,” it said.

Through the portal, the government has allowed sharing of data of construction workers registering on eShram with the concerned Building and Other Construction Workers’ (BOCW) Welfare Board to ensure registration of eShram construction workers with the respective BOCW board and access to the schemes meant for them.

Further, the minister also formally unveiled the Data Sharing Portal (DSP) under which eShram data is shared with the state governments and union territories.

“Data Sharing Portal will allow sharing of eShram beneficiaries data with the respective states and union territories in a secured manner for targeted implementation of social security and welfare schemes for the unorganised workers registered on eShram,” it said. Recently, the ministry of labour and employment kick-started the mapping of different schemes data with eShram data to identify the eShram registrants who have not yet received the benefits of these schemes.

“This data is also being shared with States/UTs based on which, States/UTs can identify unorganised workers who have not yet received benefit of the social welfare/security schemes and provide schemes’ benefit to them, on priority.” it added.

The labour ministry had launched the eShram portal on August 26, 2021 to create a comprehensive National Database of Unorganised Workers which is seeded with Aadhaar. As on April 21, 2023, over 288.7 million unorganised workers have registered on eShram portal.
