Agarwal, who leads India’s negotiations with the US, was asked a wide range of questions on the proposed trade deal, tariff issues and their impact on Indian exports, sources added.
During the meeting, officials indicated that proposals to import soybean and corn from the US were being examined. Members from across parties stressed that farmers’ interests must remain central to any decision. Indian negotiators, sources said, are firm on not allowing American corn, soybean or genetically modified food.
Officials informed the committee that India’s exports between April and October have grown despite US tariffs.
Members also cited complaints from traders about the lack of a level playing field and sought clarifications on several issues. Ministry officials will provide written responses.
The panel will meet again on December 16, when officials from the Ministry of External Affairs will brief members. It will also hold discussions with the Textile and Agriculture ministries, as well as industry bodies including CII and FICCI, in the coming days.
