The cost of home-cooked vegetarian thali increased 11% year-on-year, while that of the non-veg thali declined 2% in September, according to Crisil.

The uptick in veg thali cost was largely due to an increase in the prices of vegetables. Prices of onion, potato and tomato rose 53%, 50% and 18% year-on-year, respectively. While the cost of potato and onion with was driven by lower arrivals and the arrival of tomatoes suffered the impact of heavy rainfall on output in Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra.

Vegetables account for around 37% of the overall cost of the vegetarian thali.

Prices of pulses which account for 9% of the thali cost was 14% higher compared to last year due to lower opening stock on account of lower yield last year.

The non-veg thali cost, on the other hand, was weighed down by an year-on-year decline of 13% in the cost of broiler chicken.

“We expect a moderate correction in onion prices once the kharif supply comes into the market. Potato prices are also expected to decline though tomato prices may remain elevated amid lean supply,” Said Pushan Sharma, director, research, Crisil Market Intelligence and Analytics.
