Budget Day Begins with Tradition and Technology
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman once again underlined the government’s blend of tradition and technology by carrying the Union Budget documents on a digital tablet placed inside a red bahi-khata-style pouch.
This marks the continuation of the paperless Budget format introduced by the Narendra Modi government, reinforcing its push towards sustainability and digital governance.
From Colonial Briefcase to Indian Bahi-Khata
In 2019, Sitharaman replaced the colonial-era leather briefcase, a legacy from British rule, with the traditional bahi-khata, symbolising a cultural shift. Two years later, in 2021, she further modernised the process by switching to a digital tablet to carry Budget papers.
The red bahi-khata, adorned with the golden national emblem, represents a clear break from traditions rooted in 18th-century Britain, which India followed for decades.
After presenting her first Budget in 2019, the Finance Minister had remarked that it was time to move past the country’s “British hangover” and embrace indigenous symbols. She also noted that the bahi-khata was simpler and easier to carry.
Ninth Consecutive Budget for FM Sitharaman
The Union Budget 2026-27 will be Sitharaman’s ninth consecutive Budget as Finance Minister, making her one of the longest-serving holders of the portfolio in India’s history.Her consistent presence has brought continuity to fiscal policy during periods marked by global uncertainty and domestic economic shifts.
Students to Witness Budget Presentation Live
After presenting the Budget in Parliament at 11 am, Sitharaman will interact with around 30 college students from across the country.
As part of the initiative, the students will watch the live Budget presentation from the Lok Sabha Gallery, offering them a rare opportunity to observe one of the most important Parliamentary proceedings of the year.
Youth Engagement and Exposure to Governance
Selected from diverse academic backgrounds, including commerce, economics, medical education and vocational courses, the students represent multiple states across India.
They will also visit the Ministry of Finance at Kartavya Bhawan-1, where they will interact with senior officials to gain insights into policy-making, administrative functioning and the role of institutions in nation-building, according to an official statement.
