The state government has decided to promote investments in smaller concerns rather than heavy industries which could lead to displacement of tribals from their homes. According to sources, the government’s primary focus is on tourism opportunities in Bastar. A senior official, who did not wish to be identified, told ET, “Bastar region will bear the scars of Maoism for some time.
The government is aware that while providing employment opportunities, there cannot be any displacement or change in the lifestyle of the tribals of Bastar. Setting up of heavy industries could mean increase in mining activity or it could mean displacement of tribals from villages. This will lead to more anguish in a strife-torn region. That is why the focus industries have been spelt out by the administration.”
The state government is promoting hospitality and tourism projects in Bastar. According to sources, the government has given a call to healthcare institutes to run small hospitals in Bastar. Addressing investors at an Investor Connect summit in New Delhi, CM Vishnu Deo Sai underlined this vision, saying, “Bastar is witnessing a remarkable turnaround, with Maoist violence declining and improvement in road and internet connectivity. Bastar is fast emerging as a new hub for both investment and tourism.” In the latest Investor summit in Bastar, the state government has attracted investments worth ₹32,000 crore.
