The tax return data filed in financial year (FY) 2022-23 showed that Maharashtra yet again topped the list of states to have filed the highest income tax returns at 1.98 crore. It was followed by Uttar Pradesh, and Gujarat at the second and third spot.
The total number of ITRs filed this time stood at over 7.78 crore, a significant increase compared to previous FY when 7.14 crore ITRs were filed. Notably, 7.39 crore ITRs were filed in FY 2020-21.
Rajasthan, West Bengal, Karnataka, Delhi and Andhra Pradesh also made it among top ten states to have filed most number of ITRs.

The data also showed a nearly double increase in the number of individuals who reported over ₹one crore annual income this time. The data that 1,69,890 individuals have shown total income of above ₹1 crore, which is higher than 1,14,446 individuals in the previous fiscal.
The income tax department also said that of the total ITRs, 53.67 lakh were first-time filers. It also said the filing of ITRs peaked on July 31, 2023, (the due date for salaried taxpayers and other non-tax audit cases), with over 64.33 lakh ITRs being filed on a single day.
The last date for filing tax returns for income earned in the previous fiscal by individuals and those who do not need to get their accounts audited is July 31.
