NEW YORK: Donald Trump, former President of the United States, arrived in New York City on his private plane on Monday to face charges related to hush money paid to porn star Stormy Daniels.
The former US president’s private plane – painted in red, white and blue with “TRUMP” in big letters on the side and an image of the American flag on the tail – arrived at LaGuardia Airport in Queens after a 3-1/2 hour flight from West Palm Beach near his Florida home.
Clad in a blue suit and wearing a red tie, Trump walked deliberately and alone down a flight of stairs from the airplane and climbed into an SUV for a drive in a motorcade to Trump Tower in Manhattan.
The 76-year-old Republican, seeking to regain the presidency in 2024, will surrender at the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office on Tuesday, where he will be fingerprinted before being arraigned and pleading not guilty.
Trump is the first former US president to face criminal charges.
His arraignment will take place amid tight security in Manhattan, with Trump expected to surrender to authorities after leaving his Fifth Avenue skyscraper. While thousands of police will be present, it is unknown how many Trump supporters and detractors will also appear.
Trump plans to plead not guilty to all charges and his lawyers have said he is a victim of political persecution. The charges, which include at least one felony, are expected to be unsealed during the arraignment, which will likely last around 15 minutes.
Trump’s legal team opposed the presence of cameras in the courtroom.
He has hired a new lawyer, Todd Blanche, to join his legal team. Trump’s motorcade went to Trump Tower in Manhattan, where he made no public comments. His lawyers urged the judge not to allow videography, photography, and radio coverage of the arraignment, and the decision will be made by Justice Juan Merchan.
Trump is due to return straight to Florida after the hearing to deliver an evening speech. The case is one of several criminal investigations the former president faces that could result in further, more serious charges before the 2024 presidential election.
Trump’s campaign raised $7 million in three days after news of the indictment, and a Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted after the news broke showed that his lead in the Republican Party’s presidential nominating contest has widened over rivals.
