CHENNAI: An NRI software engineer was duped of 10 lakh by unknown men posing as income tax department officials.
The fraudsters had contacted the victim on his mobile phone and got the details of his ATM card and stole the money by sending him a phishing link to his mobile phone. A case has been registered and an investigation is on.
The software engineer identified as Badhri Narayanan, 45, had come to his house at Virugambakkam to visit his mother. Police said that on Wednesday, Narayanan had gone to an ATM near Virugambakkam where he incorrectly entered the PIN twice and his card got blocked.
As he got back home, he received a call from an unknown number. The unknown caller told Narayanan that he was from the customer care department of the bank concerned and asked for the details of his account and his card. He said that he was required to update his income tax details immediately. As Narayanan’s ATM card was blocked, he readily gave his details. The caller then sent a link to Narayanan’s phone. As Narayanan clicked the link, a total of 10 lakh was debited from his account in three instalments.
Narayanan then went to his bank and found that he was duped by fraudsters. A police complaint was lodged and an investigation is on.
