SHIMLA: Two female tourists from America, of Indian origin, were rescued safely with the help of helicopters from Churdhar peak area in Sirmaur district on Saturday. The local administration had received information that two women were trapped on the peak area amid snow, after which the help of India Air Force was taken to rescue these women. On Saturday morning, two Cheetah helicopters reached a place called Teesri near Churdhar and both the women were airlifted to Chandigarh.
Being the foreign citizens, the union ministry of home affairs, union ministry of external affairs, US Embassy and union ministry of defence all were involved in the rescue operation.
“Based on the request of the civil admin to evacuate an American national, who had suffered a spinal injury during trekking, IAF launched a Cheetah helicopter for the casualty evacuation. IAF airlifted the woman trekker successfully from the treacherous terrain of Teesri village of Himachal Pradesh and brought her for further medical attention to Chandigarh,” Indian Air Force stated in a post on X.
Deputy Commissioner, Sirmaur, Sumit Khimta said that the district administration had received information about the two rescued female tourists being trapped in Churdhar’s Teesri area on Friday evening, immediately after which the district administration started making necessary arrangements for their rescue.
He said that the name of one of these two rescued women is Richa Abhay Sonawane, who was born in Darjeeling, West Bengal and has a US passport. Similarly, the name of the second woman is Sonia Ratan, who was also born in India and she also has a US passport and according to the information, she has undergone spinal surgery and has spinal injury.
He said that these two female tourists have been safely rescued and taken to Chandigarh on Saturday morning where they have been treated. He said that as soon as the information was received about these two women being stranded in Teesri area at around 4 pm on Friday, SDM Sangrah Sunil Kayath was immediately sent to the spot along with a team of police, doctors and other officers.
Sumit Khimta said that lady doctor Shalini Negi and the medical team reached there in the night itself and after checking the health of these tourists, they were provided medical services. He said that information about the two female tourists being trapped in Churdhar’s Teesri area was received on Friday evening and immediately after which the district administration had started making necessary arrangements for their rescue. He said that Richa Abhay Sonawane and Sonia Ratan were both born in India but both are American citizens and both have US passports and Sonia Ratan has undergone spinal surgery. Both the women had gone trekking where their health deteriorated.
Khimta said that as soon as the information about the female tourists being stranded was received, SDM Sangrah Sunil Kayth was immediately sent to the spot along with police, doctors and a team of other officers.
He said that the first team of police personnel had reached the spot at around 1 am after which a medical team also reached there and later the third team of SDRF personnel also reached the spot.
