NEW DELHI: The United Kingdom on Monday has imposed new sanctions on four extremist Israeli settlers for alleged human rights abuses against Palestinian communities in the West Bank, according to a statement by the UK foreign secretary. The decision comes in response to a significant increase in violence by extremist settlers in the region over the past year.
The statement highlights that some residents of illegal Israeli settlements and outposts have been using harassment, intimidation, and violence to pressure Palestinian communities into leaving their land. The individuals targeted by the sanctions include Moshe Sharvit, Yinon Levy, and Zvi Bar Yosef.
“There have been unprecedented levels of violence by extremist settlers in the West Bank over the past year. Some residents of illegal Israeli settlements and outposts have used harassment, intimidation and violence to put pressure on Palestinian communities to leave their land,” read the statement.
“Two of the individuals designated today–Moshe Sharvit and Yinon Levy–have in recent months used physical aggression, threatened families at gunpoint, and destroyed property as part of a targeted and calculated effort to displace Palestinian communities. One illegal outpost, set up by Zvi Bar Yosef, has been described by local Palestinian residents as a “source of systematic intimidation and violence,” it added.

The new measures include strict financial and travel restrictions. These sanctions are in line with the UK’s commitment to ban those responsible for settler violence from entering the country. Foreign Secretary David Cameron has condemned the actions of the Israeli settlers, stating that their behavior is illegal and unacceptable.
Cameron emphasized that the Israeli settlers are threatening Palestinians and forcibly driving them away from their rightful land. He called on Israel to take stronger action to halt settler violence and ensure security and stability for both Israelis and Palestinians. Cameron also expressed concern over the failure to follow through on commitments and undertakings made in the past.
The extremist settlers’ targeting and attacking of Palestinian civilians are undermining the security and stability of both communities, added Cameron.
