To commemorate Kerala-born business tycoon and billionaire Yusuffali MA’s milestone 50 years in the United Arab Emirates; Dr Shamsheer Vayalil, a prominent entrepreneur in the healthcare sector in the UAE, has announced a philanthropic initiative to undertake 50 life-saving heart surgeries for children, particularly those from conflict zones and underprivileged background. The initiative is a heartfelt tribute to Yusuffali’s extraordinary five decades and substantial contributions to humanitarian causes, according to an announcement from Dr Vayalil’s VPS Healthcare Group.
“Mr Yusuffali has touched many lives with his kindness and the humanitarian aspect is integral to our family ethos. We seek to mark this milestone with a unique celebration by dedicating ourselves to supporting children. Through these 50 life-saving surgeries, we aspire to generate opportunities that inspire children to dream beyond limitations and overcome challenges,” Dr Vayalil, who is married to Dr Shabeena Yusuffali, the eldest daughter of Yusuffali, told the Times of India.
Retail tycoon Yusuffali, chairman of Lulu Group International, is among the wealthiest non-resident Indians globally and arrived at Dubai’s Rashid Port on December 31, 1973, marking the genesis of a remarkable journey, according to the release from the group. “From this humble beginning, he forged a business empire while assuming roles as a community leader, philanthropist, and a beacon of hope for those in need,” the release said.
Dr Vayalil, who is founder and chairman of Burjeel Holdings, one of the largest healthcare services providers in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, added that Indian business leaders have received big support from the leadership in the UAE which is the reason behind many of their successes. “We have been getting a lot of support here which is why many more Indians are successfully getting into the business ecosystem. Besides, there is a historic connection between the UAE and India with political will from leaders in both the countries to forge closer links in the coming years,” Dr Vayalil added.
The 50 heart surgeries, announced under the philanthropic initiative, are aimed at children with congenital heart diseases and will be carried out in specialised hospitals under the umbrella of Burjeel Holdings, spanning the UAE and Oman, and hospitals in India. Typically, the surgery required to address congenital heart disease comes with a high cost, making it financially challenging for many parents. Dr Vayalil, whose philanthropic endeavours extend to India through his family office, VPS Healthcare, is optimistic about this initiative’s global reach and impact. Following the announcement, VPS Healthcare has invited applications from parents of deserving children.
