Murty, 51, passed away in Leh after a cardiac arrest.
His business partner and Pepperfry cofounder Ashish Shah said he has “lost a friend, mentor, brother, soulmate” in Murty.
“Extremely devastated to inform that my friend, mentor, brother, soulmate @AmbareeshMurty is no more. Lost him yesterday night to a cardiac arrest at Leh. Please pray for him and for strength to his family and near ones,” he said in a tweet.
Swati Bhargava, cofounder of cashback and coupons site Cashkaro, said Murty was an inspiration to many. “So sad & shocking to hear of @AmbareeshMurty’s sudden demise due to cardiac arrest. May his soul rest in peace. An amazing entrepreneur & inspiration to many… may his legacy with @Pepperfry live on #RIP.”

Rajiv Srivatsa, founder of Urban Ladder, and partner at Antler India, lauded Murty for building a furniture brand such as Pepperfry in a difficult category. “It’s tough enough to be an entrepreneur. It’s tougher to be one, in a category like furniture and building the brand @Pepperfry across a decade. Have heard great things about him,” he said.
Xiaomi India president Muralikrishnan B remembered Murty as a Ladakh lover and biking enthusiast, among other things. “Amby – Leader, Reader, Trivia buff, Music aficionado, Biking enthusiast, Ladakh lover, mentor, friend and much more … this leaves me numb. Om Shanti My prayers are with his family, friends and Team Pepperfry,” he posted.
Murty started Pepperfry with Shah in 2012 and the startup became one of the leading online furniture retailers at the time. He was planning to take Pepperfry public and had been working on the initial public offering since last year.
Amish Tripathi, author and diplomat, remembered Murty from their days at IIM-C. “Terrible news. Ambi was my senior from IIM-C. A great guy. Our batch mates and I are all in shock… Sincere condolences to his family. Om Shanti,” he said.
