LONDON: The UK government has commissioned an independent review into the Leicester civil unrest between Hindus and Muslims that took place last year. This will be the first government-led review into the riots, which led to vandalism, assaults and attacks on places of worship, homes and cars in August and September 2022.
UK secretary of state for levelling up, housing and communities Michael Gove has ordered the review.
He has appointed former minister for the West Midlands Lord Austin as the chair who will lead an independent panel that will establish the facts of what took place over the period of unrest and the sequence of events. The panel will present an analysis of the causes of the unrest, make practical recommendations for how similar events that may arise in future could be prevented, and set out proposals and ideas to strengthen social cohesion locally.
Leicester city council is no longer carrying out its own inquiry into the unrest after hate crime expert Dr Chris Allen, who it had appointed to lead its review, stepped down following online abuse.
Various reports have been published since the unrest but all have been done by private organisations and charities.
“This has more weight than previous reports as it is being done by the government. Everyone should accept the findings,” said Dharmesh Lakhani, owner of Bobby’s Restaurant on Leicester’s Belgrave Road, the epicentre of the unrest. “I am heartened to hear the review is being led by the central government. We will fully support it. We had asked for this all along. This unrest had the potential to spread, that’s why we need a proper inquiry to make sure it doesn’t happen again,” he said. Trupti Patel, president of the Hindu Forum of Britain, said: “We expect this inquiry to bring out all the facts.” Conservative councillor Hemant Bhatia said: “As this is a government-led inquiry people will have more faith in this than any other inquiry. We all need to ensure that our communities feel reassured. What will be interesting is to know who will be on that independent panel.”
